NL East Season Preview

Trenton Thrashers

Last season: 97-65, 1st place, lost in DCS to Sacramento.

Projection: 89-73, 2nd place, Wild Card position.

Key Additions: LR - Tony Martin, Rookies: 1B - Mark Meng, SS - Jimmy Stevenson

Key Losses: SP - Juan Lee, 1B - Cesar Fernandez

The big question around Trenton is: Have the Thrashers arrived? Is this young talented squad really that good. Every thing seemed to go right for the club after the All Star break last season, as they passed the former champs from Kansas City and nearly over took Sacramento for a first round bye. Can this effort be repeated for an entire season? A minor step back should be expected.

Offense

Led by Season 7 NL MVP, Villano, this season's version will pack punch from 1-8. Every hitter is capable with the stick creating a lineup without any holes. The largest deficiency is the lack of a true lead-off hitter. Trenton doesn't possess a hitter who can create runs with speed. This lineup relies heavily on the HR and scoring in bunches.

1. C - Jesse Stevenson - .299 Avg, .381 OBP, 21% CS (Career Averages)
2. RF - Lawrence Speier - .285, .346
3. 2B - Tomas Villano - .317, .966 OPS, 40 HR, 115 RBI, .981 FLD%
4. CF - Garrett Perez - .277, .942, 45, 112, .987
5. LF - Vic Rivera - .283, .891, 33, 99
6. 3B - Pedro Ordaz - .264, .848, 30, 93, .975
7. 1B - Mark Meng* - 2 time AAA MVP, .316, 1.055, 52, 156
8. SS - Jimmy Stevenson* - .305 Avg, .369 OBP, 13, 69, .987

Bench

Money was spent in the off-season to acquire some bench depth as free agents Aramis Cruz (3B) and Timothy Mathews (SS) were signed. Chris Dunham (C) returns for his 7th season as Stevenson's defensive replacement and Harry Johnson (COF/CIF) was selected in the Rule 5 draft. He will be expected to provide defense at the corner positions and some quality ABs against left handed hitters.

Starting Pitching

The Thrashers boasted five 10 game winners in their starting rotation last season. All these pitchers will return expect Lee, who will be replaced by long reliever Kent (only 2 starts since season 1). Sanchez is the best of the group and entires his third full season as the clubs #1 starter. Feng and McPherson are the veterans of the group but are only entering the prime of their careers, more is expected from this pair if the Thrashers are to take the next step.

#1 - Junior Sanchez - 23-18, 3.38 ERA, .230 OAV, 1.23 WHIP (Career Stats)
#2 - Pep Feng - 54-56, 4.28, .268, 1.33
#3 - Derrick McPherson - 51-58, 4.23, .263, 1.34
#4 - Bono Wilson - 20-20, 4.52, .273, 1.39
#5 - Joey Kent - 24-13, 4.96, .288, 1.49

Bullpen

Last season the Thrashers led the league in BSVs. Efforts have been taken by the club over the last two seasons to shored up this weakness. Ward was added as closer last season and his 44 Saves did not disappoint. This season Martin has been added through free agency to replace Kent at long relief. The pieces appear to be in place, now will they lineup as expected.

Long Relief- Tony Martin - 53-34, 3.39 ERA, .249 OAV, 1.31 WHIP (Career Stats)
Long Relief - Bo Forbes - 50-40, 4.47, .259, 1.35
Mop Up - Ozzie Stanley - 26-42, 5.12, .279, 1.46
Setup - Dann Tollberg - 115 Saves / 138 Save Ops, 3.96, .260, 1.27
Setup - Rex Trombley - 23/46, 4.96, .280, 1.53
LH Specialist - Larry Carroll - 12/26, 5.66, .313, 1.63
Closer - Chad Ward - 44/52, 3.36, 2.42, 1.30

Kansas City Kangaroos

Last season: 89-73, 2nd NL East, lost in Wildcard round to Trenton.

Projection: 95-67, 1st NL East

Key Additions: CF - Sam Riggs, Setup - Esteban Roque, Rookies: RF - Trevor Cook, LR - Curtis Bolick

Key Losses: C - Gill Blair

Kansas City has been a powerhouse since current management took the reigns in season 2, capturing five straight division titles, and 2 World Series championships. But last season they could not match the charge from the Thrashers and were left to soul search for the off-season. Few changes were made to the foundation of the club and perhaps the greatest change of impact will be the loss of Blair. Leaving some pundits to wonder if this team has improved at all and if they can keep up to the Thrashers. Clearly management has faith that their players can return to form and take back the division title.

Offense

The lose of Blair, and aging of Henley and Cook leaves huge holes to fill in the offense. There is no clear replacement for their run production so the entire lineup must take it to another level. Although the lineup is solid from 1-7, it is not as daunting as it has been in the past. Replacements Riggs, Trevor Cook and Strange don't provide the same fear as Cook, Henley and Blair. Guerrero, Riggs, Valdes, Nieto, Grace and Huckaby will produce a tonne of offence but there are holes in the lineup that have not been there before.

1. CF - Sam Riggs - .288 AVG, .359 OBP, .970 FLD% (Career Averages)
2. SS - Willie Guerrero - .302, .381, 19 HR, 89 RBI, .958 FLD%
3. 2B - Rickey Valdes - .334, .981 OPS, 23, 90, .989
4. 3B - Midre Nieto - .290, .882, 37, 130, .946
5. 1B - Quinn Grace - .308, .894, 34, 103
6. RF - Trevor Cook* - .262, .835, 20, 49
7. LF - "Sweet" Lou Huckaby - .263, .846, 33, 96
8. C - Tom Strange"Brew" - .274, .737, 3, 13, 106 AB in ML, 34% CS in AAA

* denotes AAA career averages

Bench

Kansas City will be holding some excellent talent on their bench. Aging star Cristian Cook (OF) has been relegated to a bench role but still has enough left to be of use. Rookies Dickie Ferguson (IF) and Vic Stewart (C) are slotted to make the jump from AA and will get their feet wet this season before taking on a larger role with the club. Veterans Bill Nelson (IF) and Jamie Levis (OF) will provide quality ABs and solid defence when called upon. A solid bench that will provide adequate support.

Starting Pitching

A preview of this crew is hardly a needed. They've been together forever for the past two seasons and the top 3 starters have been together for six seasons. There is little doubt about what the top 3 can bring, they are all former All Stars and provide the core of the rotation. They key to this groups success will be Dickens and Bonilla. These youngsters must step up and perform to their potential. It is crucial that they help take some pressure of the veterans.

#1 - Mark McNamara - 77-59, 4.02 ERA, .258 OAV, 1.33 WHIP
#2 - Sid Prince - 87-68, 4.16, .266, 1.36
#3 - Jimmy Ellis - 89-56, 4.13, .271, 1.38
#4 - Bump Dickens - 34-25, 5.18, .284, 1.53
#5 - Jesus Bonilla - 17-14, 5.91, .301, 1.60

Bullpen

Relief pitching should not be in Kansas City. The bullpen is deep and reliable at short relief. Lee enters his third season in the closing role and although he lacks control at times, he knows how to close out games with 75 Saves and only 6 BSVs in the last two seasons. Long relief may be an issue as the Kangaroos will start the season with two unproven rookies holding this role. However, any issues here could be masked by strong short relief performances.

Long Relief - Curtis Bolick* - 10-8, 4.29, .281, 1.36
Long Relief - Warren Starr - 4-3, 4.33, 2.77, 1.67, 35.1 IP
Set Up - Mike Barfield - 119 Saves / 142 Save Ops, 4.03, .264, 1.36
Set Up - Esteban Roque - 62/88, 4.21, .263, 1.32
Set Up - Wendell Gardner - 62/83, 3.38, .243, 1.24
Set Up - Pepe Escobar - 0/6, 5.28, .273, 1.57
Closer - Cameron Lee - 90/110, 4.59, .252, 1.38

Charlotte Queen's Men

Last season: 68-94, Third Place

Projection: 83-79, Third place

Key Additions: None

Key Losses: LF - Roberto Borbon

Last season was a supreme disappointment for this club. Expectations were high after winning 91 games and earning wildcard spot in season 6. However, things didn't go as expected and the franchise experienced their sixth losing season in their history. Now everyone is left wondering what to expect in season 8. No changes were made to improve this team so management is relying on improvements from current players to right the ship. The hitting is excellent and the pitching solid. These guys can match up against Trenton and KC.

Offense

The theme of the offence is young power. The average age is 26 and five of the eight have 30+ HR potential. Even though they may be young, they are not inexperienced. There are no rookies in the lineup and each player has between 1 and 5 seasons under his belt. The majority of the offence will come from Perez, Malone and Gomez. There may be concern about the consistency, only two of the starters have ever hit over .300 in a season and none of them have a career average over .300. The top pitchers may be able to shut them down.

1. CF - Carl Osik - .267 Avg, .337 OBP, 57 SB, .984 FLD%
2. C - Randall Perez - .287, .413, 15 HR, 65 RBI, 25% CS
3. 2B - Mel Malone - .285, .932 OPS, 30 HR, 87 RBI, .985 FLD%
4. LF - Tomas Gomez - .285, .871, 36, 110,
5. 1B - Donatello McMillan - .279, .836, 30, 109
6. RF - Ned Smith - .227, .751, 39, 101
7. 3B - Hong-Jin Yosida - .190, .711, 15, 30 in first 184 ML ABs last season
8. SS - Glen Kingland - .273 Avg, .330 OBP, .963 FLD%

Bench

Depth is a major concern. The bench provides a potential starter in Ismael Bocachica (COF) who will provide the power. Andrew Dupler (C) will spell Perez but offers no defensive improvement, Ben Sheldon (Utility) can provide some valuable pinch hits against righties and some adequate defence. Karim James (SS) is the defensive specialist of the group and Kyle Collins (2B) was a Rule 5 pickup who spent last season at HiA and will provide some speed on the bases.

Starting Pitching

This group of twenty somethings has talent but lacks results. Led by Stephenson, who signed a 5 year $37.5 million contract in the offseason, they all need to be better their ERAs by 0.5 a run if the team is to compete for a playoff spot. There is good depth as all five can produce 10+ wins but all five have to be good to help this team return to playoff form.

#1 - Gary Stephenson - 41-48, 4.77, .275, 1.43
#2 - Nick McIntyre - 18-21, 4.37, .263, 1.36
#3 - Brian Lee - 32-27, 4.23 ERA, .267, 1.37
#4 - Brian Rollins - 27-28, 4.58 ERA, .272, 1.41
#5 - Joseph Ramirez - 11-9, 5.22, .272, 1.40 in 22 starts as a S7 rookie

Bullpen

Youth again prevails in the bullpen, only setup man Adams and Pong have more than one season of ML experience. Former AAA Fireman of the Year, Guzman will take over the closer role from Pong. His lack of experience should be a concern, but he has the pedigree to do the job. Franklin and Howington can offer spot starts and solid innings in long relief situations. The bullpen could be the weakness of the team, as it relies on a lot of youth and a good hitting team could break them.

Long Relief - Bernard Franklin - 5.05, .288, 1.51 in 62.1 IP as S7 rookie
Long Relief - Robb Howington - 4.59, .240, 1.49 in 115.2 IP as S7 rookie
Long Relief - Clint Adams - 5.24, .291, 1.59 in 80.2 IP as S7 rookie
Set Up - Vladimir Allen - 5/10, 3.75, .285, 1.41
SetUp - Sun Pong - 130/160, 4.57, .297, 1.49
Closer - Orlando Guzman - 1/5, 4.33, .247, 1.34 in 120.2 IP as S7 rookie

Wichita 'weed

Last season: 44-118, 4th place

Projection: 30-132, 4th place

Key Additions: 1B - Happy Henley, LR - Arlie Mottola, Rookies: CF - Enrique Ramirez, 3B - Fernando Solano, 1B - Alex Perez

Key Losses: Many faces are gone, none will be missed.

Weed fans should prepare themselves for a long, disappointing season. Last season was the first season under new management and they immediately turned to the future, trading away key players for prospects. Many of these prospects will eventually help the ML club, but for now Rule 5 draft picks litter the ML roster, many of these have not even seen time at AAA. The 'weed's AAA team would beat these guys 7 out of 10 times. A top draft pick is the best thing this team can hope to achieve.

Offence

Full of Rule 5 picks and one aging superstar, this lineup will struggle to score runs. There is a disturbing lack of experience in the starting lineup, only Henley has any ML ABs and he won't have the durability make more than 450 appearances. Ramirez will provide some spark in the leadoff spot and Solano has big time power, but after these guys there is little to get excited about.

1. CF - Enrique Ramirez* - .292 Avg, .377 OBP, .853 OBP, 14 HR, 92 RBI
2. RF - Bernard Henry* - .297, .387, .930, 26, 94
3. 1B - Happy Henley - .307, .377, .972, 41, 136
4. 3B - Fernando Solano* - .280, .350, .952, 34, 113
5. C - Donatello Neal* - .335, .415, .943, 10, 57, 30% CS
6. SS - Albert Valdes* - .235, .254, .654, 13, 76, .950 FLD%
7. 2B - Yamil Gonzalez* - .270, .334, .731, 12, 41
8. LF - Bill Little* - .315, .388, .783, 7, 70

* denotes minor league average stats

Bench

Four more Rule 5 draft picks will occupy spots on the bench. Alex Perez (1B) will spell Henley and will provide some big power for key pinch hits. Defensive specialist Cesar Lee (Utility) provides solid defensive relief for all IF and OF positions and will be a threat on the bases. Felipe James (RF) is another big bat who can play the corner positions, and Julio Vazquez (3B) tore up AA the last three seasons and may be the wildcard of the group.

Starting Pitching

This group will have a tough time preventing runs. Wilkinson is the best of the group and is a 5th starter at best on most rotations. Graham and Aquino are in the twilights of middling careers, and Kolb and Parker have minor league talent. Quality starts will be rare with this group and five inning starts should be considered successful.

#1 - Harvey Wilkinson - 19-12, 4.59 ERA, .272 OAV, 1.35 WHIP
#2 - Willie Graham - 26-25, 4.08, .254, 1.28
#3 - Tony Aquino - 26-25, 5.16, .267, 1.55
#4 - Brad Parker - 2-10, 5.52, .314, 1.70
#5 - Anthony Kolb - 0-5, 5.45, .283, 1.56

Bullpen

This collection of "ragtag misfits" will provide little relief to a starting rotation that won't last five innings. There is no clear closer in this group, but Mottola may fit the role best. Lee may provide some quality innings in close games but his best days have passed him by. Stevenson should be used strictly against Lefties, but even then he will have limited effectiveness. Busby could provide some spot starts and long relief appearances. Crosby is a Rule 5 pick who shows some potential. He holds three effective pitches, however control is an issue and his ceiling may be as a Mopup guy.

Long Relief - Joseph Lee - 4.53 ERA, .261 OAV, 1.45 WHIP
Long Relief - Leo Crosby* - 4.49, .258, 1.49
Long Relief - Pinky Stevenson - 5.03, .278, 1.57
Long Relief -Arlie Mottola - 4.24, 2.69, 1.40
Long Relief - Joshua Busby - 4.70, .270, 1.45

Season 8 Begins!

It's that time of year again, with the sound of cracking bats, flyballs hitting windshields, and half-drunk crowds cheering on mascots racing in the outfield. It's the time for optimism, checking out all the hot new rookies, and aging vets trying to hang on.

Reigning World Series champ Sacramento Terrible Two's start the spring with a win over Portland, while other teams that win begin the spring on a high, with the losers reminding their fans it's only spring and that the results don't matter. Players such as Seattle's newly aquired Paul Yoshii begin with their new teams trying to make their mark and excite their new city's fans.

This season should be as exciting as all the rest, with every team feeling they can make it to the big time and be the next teams to make the World Series, as the last 4 seasons have had 8 different teams make the final series. Who will it be this year? As the spring winds down and the new players settle in with their new teams, rookies try to prove they are major leaguers, and a few new faces surprise, teams should be able to have an accurate picture of their personnel, strengths, weaknesses, and needs. We should be expecting many detailed season previews and an exciting season for everyone!

San Diego Storm season 8

San Diego Storm season 8 preview coming soon!!

Sorry guys, Tuesday I got my second set of Cortisone injections in my back. I have been dealing with a couple of herniated discs in my back, and often am asleep due to pain in my leg. I will try to get something as soon as I feel I can sit at the cpu long enough to finish a preview.

Minor League Report - Trenton Thrashers

Under the current regime, Trenton has had a strong focus on scouting since Season 3. This philosophy has helped build a deep organization that has produced strong clubs at all levels. Graduates from the system include Season 7 MVP Tomas Villano, starting CF Garrett Perez, and #1 starter Junior Sanchez. There are more graduates to come in the next few seasons, here is a list of who to look for:

Top Position Players

Trenton
Thrashers
Age: 26B/T: R/R

3.
Al Manto
Trenton
Thrashers
Age: 20B/T: S/R
Born: Sand Springs, OK
Position(s): C
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

Al was Trenton's 1st round pick (9th overall) in season 6. He will be playing AAA this season and management has him slotted in the backup position for season 9. Manto is another well rounded prospect who will contribute in all aspects of the game.

4.
Al Aguilera
Trenton
Thrashers
Age: 22B/T: L/R
Born: Campina Del Seibo, DO
Position(s): LF/1B/DH
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

Al is a season 4 international free agent who has been tearing up the minors with a .404 OBP and a .954 OPS. Currently Aguilera is blocked from a ML position by Vic Rivera, but he possess the potential to replace the All Star if circumstances permit. Al will spend his third season in AAA and should provide excellent offence to match his solid defence.

5.
Clarence Bonds
Trenton
Thrashers
Age: 23B/T: L/L
Born: Corona, CA
Position(s): CF/2B/OF
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

Clarence was acquired in a season 8 offseason trade from New Britain. Bonds is the CF prospect the club has been looking for to provide some depth at this key position. This first round draft pick will spend the season at AAA and must improve on his defence if he wants to make the big club. His hitting is nearly ML ready and he will provide a much needed speed threat.

Top Pitching Prospects

1.
Jamie Rapp
Trenton
Thrashers
Age: 25B/T: R/R
Born: Hamilton, NJ
Position(s): P (SP1)
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

2.
Bernard Richardson
Trenton
Thrashers
Age: 20B/T: R/R
Born: Oak Park, MI
Position(s): P (SP1)

Drafted in the 1st round (19th overall), Bernard is the youngest top prospect and will provide some tremendous innings to the ML club in a few more seasons. He will spend this season at HiA and will not be rushed by management.

3.
Ivan Cedeno
Trenton
Thrashers
Age: 25B/T: R/R
Born: Velasco, CU
Position(s): P (SP3)
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

This season 6 international free agent is ML ready and could contribute immediately. However his AAA rookie season was below expectations as his 5.02 ERA would indicate and he will be spending one more season at AAA.

4.
Ted Hall
Trenton
Thrashers
Age: 21B/T: R/R
Born: Camden, NY
Position(s): P (ClA)
View Hardball Dynasty Profile

Ted was drafted in the 2nd round of season 5 and should provide some much needed short relief help very soon. He will spend some time at AAA this season and hopes to improve on his 64 saves in 70 opp and his 3.14 ERA.

5.
Howie Perry
Trenton
Thrashers
Age: 24B/T: S/L
Born: Cincinnati, OH
Position(s): P (LRA)

Seattle's Free Agent Signings

Seattle - Seattle is pleased to announce the signing of 2 Free Agents Paul Yoshii & Tony Johnson.
Yoshii was with Seattle back in Season 1 before being shipped off to Jacksonville. He returns with great promise and should fit nicely in the 3 hole of the Seattle lineup. He brings a veteran presence and because the 'Dogs pick 6th in the upcoming draft, they only had to surrender a 2nd round pick, which management felt was more then worth it, even if his power is in decline and won't be helped much by moving to Safeco. Having helped lead JAX to the playoffs and an MVP under his belt he should help provide a boost to the young Salty Dogs, and the risk is minimized by only having to go to a 2 year deal.

Johnson on the other hand was a surprise signing. Johnson won the Cy Young in Season 6 but had an even better year last year despite his spotty 12-10 record for the World Champion Terrible Twos. That's the good news! The bad news is he tore his labrum last year and is currently on the DL (and will be for the next 118 days), with him due to return around 4/12 PM2, or right around the All Star break. When asked why he would sign someone that is currently rehabbing and won't make it back till the All Star break, GM Donald Key was quoted as saying "After missing out on a few guys that would have helped us from Day 1, we determined this was a relatively low cost ($3.6M) with the potential for a high reward. We offered other guys a lot more money then it took to sign Johnson but we were turned down."

Signing Johnson was the economical (cheap) move, but it did allow them to bring back 2 of their own Free Agents, A.J. Gonzales & Santos Sanchez. The Sanchez signing is of particular note because it allows them to leave Season 7 Gold Glove CF'er Dante Baek in CF and not have to shift him to SS, which would have happened had they landed a more expensive member to the pitching staff. So in essence by going with the fall back option of the rotation (Tony Johnson) it could have a positive impact on the whole staff by remaining strong defensively at both SS and CF. Sanchez may lost a little bit of range, but his glove is still quite steady. That doesn't even take into account the longer committment they would have given to other Free Agent pitchers. The other pitcher they brought back was A.J. Gonzales. Gonzales pitched decent last year for the Salty Dogs and was brought back on a 1 Year deal for $3 M. His signing means that Seattle's rotation could be a little heavy on the lefthanders (Silva, Lee, & possibly May).

Boston Changes the Game Plan

Boston, MA - The Boston Colonials have what could be considered a successful history; the team has made the playoffs five times in seven seasons, won 100+ games twice and 90 or more 5 times, and has made the DCS in 3 of the last 4 seasons. They have never advanced to the ALCS, however, and obviously have never made a World Series appearance.

To Boston GM Rick Randall, this run equates to failure.

"The fans in Boston don't want to hear about division championships or 90-win seasons," he said, "they want to hear about - and celebrate - World Series Championships."

Without exception, pitching has always been what has cost Boston it's chance in the playoffs. Since that is the case, it seems reasonable that pitching has been the primary off season focus the past 4 seasons. And it would also seem reasonable that Boston would be looking to shore up the pitching this season.....but that isn't the way this off season is going.

The Colonials did recently add right handed reliever Lee Bolick to the mix and also made a spot on the staff for Bo Goldstein, but most of this off season has been spent working on beefing up the AL's top offense.

Boston traded away brittle starting catcher Louis Romero and acquired 28-year old former All-Star 1B/DH Chad Broadhurst. This move got another big bat in the everyday lineup, but it also forces Boston to move season 7 team MVP Johnny Fischer - who has caught only 14 innings in the last 3 seasons - back behind the plate. Fischer turned 33 this past Winter and has only thrown out 24% of would be basestealers in his career, but Boston management is convinced that he can do the job 130 days out of the year behind the plate.

There is also word that Boston is making a run for another right handed power hitting former All-Star to be a key bench contributor. As it stands now, the Boston lineup will feature 7 players who hit 20+ HR and 6 who topped 97 RBI last season.

The hitter-friendly home field and a lineup stacked with right handed pop should be interesting...but can Boston advance without a top pitching staff? Boston management and fans are hoping so.

Or else this upcoming season will add to the history of failure.

Seattle's Top 10 Pitching Prospects (Top 8 Actually)

10. Pick a player - No one of note
9. Pick a player - No one of note
8. John Nathan - This former 1st Round Pick (#9 overall in Season 3) has never developed the control that many thought he would. Has landed on the DL in each of the last 2 years. The fact that he is on the list shows you how weak Seattle's pitching prospects are. Has shown flashes of brilliance but for every step forward he often takes 2 steps back. Must really learn to control his pitches if he wants to reach and stay in the majors. Has great makeup and is still only 23. Has been promoted to AAA in hopes of increasing his confidence which could help his control. Expected arrival - Season 10
John Nathan

7. Glen Dunn -Was a 2nd Round pick in Season 4. Hasn't exactly dominated, but has great makeup and demeanor. Lack of quality pitches will hurt as he progress'. Throws hard, and has decent control. Future Long man or spot starter. Expected arrival - Season 10 or 11.

6. Brett Cedeno - Was a 1st Round Sandwich pick in Season 5 (35th Overall). Pitched well in his 1st season at Rookie ball and his 2nd season was split between High A and AA. Organization mishandled him and allowed almost a 100 inning jump. It caught up to him last year in Season 7 as he tore his labrum. Currently still rehabbing. Will begin year at AAA. Expected arrival - TBD as it is unknown how he'll come back from injury.

5. Nicholas Cunningham - Lefty reliever was acquired from Memphis in Season 3. Has experience at the Major League level but has yet to stick. Is now out of options, so the next time he gets called up it will probably be for good, otherwise he'll need to clear waivers. Is a soft tosser who can dominate lefties, but can get hit hard by righties. Has 2 good pitches with great control and is very durable. Expected arrival - Season 8

4. Andres Rojas Season 5 International signing. Has good durability for a starter and no health issues to date. Has progressed 1 level at a time and could eventually find his way into the rotation at the Major League level. Lack of quality pitches could keep him from the bigs. Future is as a #5. Expected arrival - Late Season 9

3. Javy Cruz - Season 4 International Signing. Has a tendency to give up the long ball a little more then Management would like. Has increased his innings pitched each year. Future role as a setup man. Has 2 Major League pitches , but has trouble with lefties. Expected Arrival - Season 10

2. Brad Spivey - 6th Round pick by the Los Angeles Robins in Season 3, was acquired in the deal (along with Nigel Jamison) for Vitas Hogan. Has 2 great pitches, and is tough on righties and adequate vs lefties. Has great durability, but stamina is a problem. Should be able to step into a middle relieft type role if injuries arise. Will start the year in AAA to gain some more seasoning. Will be among the 1st called up for bullpen help if people in the majors should falter. Expected Arrival - Season 8

1. Kevin Martin - 1st Round pick (#11 overall) in the Season 5 draft. Is easily the best pitching prospect in the whole system, and the only one who has potential to be a #1. More likely a #2 or #3, durability is a concern. No injuries as of yet, Seattle has not been too cautious with him as evidenced by the 88 innings increase between his 1st year (in Rookie) and 2nd year (in High A). Still showed enough to skip Low A. Held him back a little more last year and only increased his workload by 6 innings. They would like to see between 180-195 innings this year. If he progresses well, could be a late season callup or an injury replacement. Expected Arrival - Late Season 8 or Season 9.

5. Davey Pellow Pellow was a 2nd Round pick in Season 5 out of the University of Notre Dame. After a successful career at South Bend he keeps proving the scouts wrong. He is the guy that just won't go away. Considered a gamer, would make a solid 4th OF or backup 1B, great guy to have on a team. He struggled early in the season at AA last year, but rebounded with a great 2nd half and with a little more seasoning you will probably be seeing him in the majors, as a low cost backup option. Expected arrival - Season 9 or 10

4. Pedro Merced - Hard to believe he 1st arrived in the bigs 5 seasons ago, playing half a season. In his first full season in the bigs (season 4) as a 21 year old rookie Pedro hit 40 bombs, in Safeco no less. Big things were expected after that outburst, but then 7 games into season 5 he landed on the DL with a herniated disk in his neck and was out for the season. Seattle was patient trying to work him back in to the rotation in Season 6 but he never regained his powerful stroke. Early last season they sent him to AAA to try and get him worked out while he still had options left. He seemed to play well last year and recovered some of his stroke. Is still in AAA and the 'Dogs will make him play his way onto the field by showing he belongs. Still only 25, he could easily make it back, then again, maybe not. Expected arrival - Season 8

3. Lyle Hatcher - Was a 2nd Round pick (56th overall) in Season 6. Is a born DH, hits well and has a great eye, would be higher on the list if he could play the field. If he continues to hit as well as he does, will force his way onto the big club. Would fit in real well on an AL team. Expected Arrival - Season 9 or 10.

2. William Murata- Was a tough sign in last years draft but Seattle finally got him to sign after dealing with an overbearing mother. At only 5'6" he fits the Dustin Pedroia mold, with a stronger glove and arm. May have to move off the hot corner (possibly 2B or COF) to arrive at the Major League Level. Expected arrival - Season 11.

1. Bronson Grey- was a 1st Round pick in Season 6 (13th overall), originally as a SS but quickly moved to 3B. Doesn't quite have the range or glove for SS at the majors but has potential to be well above average at the hot corner. Has limited experience in 2 years (less then 600 AB's), but that is due more to durability, and the organization has taken steps to get him many more AB's this year at AA. Expected arrival - Season 10 or 11.

Seattle - Good morning NABCL'ers! As promised we will be reviewing the (sorry) state of Seattle pitching. First the bright spots(this won't take long as there aren't many), Victor Silva has definitely been the most consiste starter the last few seasons and Seattle Pitching Coach Joey Weaver feels that he can help Silva improve. He has pitched 196 or more innings in 3 of the last 4 years and if he can stay healthy should provide 200 quality innings. The other bright spot is fellow Lefty Michael Lee who was the first International signing of the current administration. He has increased his innings pitched every year and despite last years 12-12 record is being counted on heavily to perform this year. This will be his 4th season in the bigs (3rd full season) and is still only 25. Filling out the rest of the rotation in some form will be Season 2 Cy Young Clint Byrdak, who needs the occasional skip in the rotation to get back to 100%, once promising Terrence Roberts and Harry Moreno will probably bounce in and out of the rotation due to their control problems. One time phenom and former 1st Round Pick Damian May will probably get some starts but due to health problems is not being counted on very much. Last years Rule 5 pickup Marino Rios did get some spot starts throughout the year and could possibly see a few this year, especially with Byrdak in the rotation, but he will mainly be coming out of the 'Dog 'pen! The rest of the players currently slotted for the bullpen are Sergei Fischer, Jose Delgado, Wendell Pettyjohn, and Victor Maradona. In season 6 Maradona as a rookie was very good in the setup role. Last year he was the closer to start the season, and while he converted 17 of 18 chances, GM Donald Key still made a trade for Esteban Roque to be the closer. Roque has left via free agency, so unless the Salty Dogs sign a FA closer (as they are rumored to be trying to land one) or make a trade Maradona will become the closer by default. There are also some arms in the minors that could make a push for the big leagues, but we'll discuss that in our next post!
